RAPAPORT... The Consensus Retailer Health Ratings is a new benchmarking tool that provides "essential context to retailer comp store sales data." Consensus Advisors contended that there is an over-reliance upon comparable store sales growth statistics. "Comps" or same-store sales are short-term focused and potentially misleading when viewed out of context, so the group created this new measure to factor in margin, inventory level, advertising spend and consumer credit practices as a measure of a retailer's health. "Comps also say nothing about a retailer's financial leverage, brand strength or ability to manage efficiently the assets on its balance sheet," the group concluded. Retailers were assigned scores and placed in one of five tiers. For the Luxury grouping, Consensus picked Coach as the clear winner against Zale, Tiffany & Co., Kay Jewelers, ShopNBC, Bluefly, Birks & Mayors, Blue Nile and Claire's.
